The Coastal Bend Disaster Recovery Group was proud to hand the keys to the Coy family in Tivoli on July 3, 2020. Their previous home was destroyed almost 3 years ago by Hurricane Harvey. This is the first of 20 new replacement MHUs. This project is a collaborative effort of Rebuild Texas, CBDRG, Catholic Charities of Corpus Christi and Catholic Charities USA to assist low income families whose homes were destroyed by Hurricane Harvey. While the COVID-19 pandemic has slowed ongoing recovery efforts, Catholic Charities of Corpus Christi and our partners are continuing to assist families across the counties Aransas, Bee, Kleberg, Nueces, Refugio, and San Patricio.
Jessica Richardson, her husband Reid (not pictured), and her four children received their new RV, given to them in partnership with Rockport Hands of Hope and the Episcopal Diocese of West Texas. The Richardson family moved from Austin to Rockport approximately 3 months before the storm, to avoid increasingly severe symptoms of a debilitating illness her son had acquired. They rode out the storm, with their RV being lifted up multiple times and slammed against the ground. Post-storm, the axle was broken and the interior of the RV had grown mold due to other damages. They are happy to be in their new safe, sanitary, and secure home. Pictured: Jessica Richardson and her 4 children.
Santiago Fuentes, client of Case Manager Karen Harris, cut the ribbon to his family’s new rebuilt home. In partnership with the Coastal Bend Recovery Group and Mennonite Disaster Services, this family was able to have a home again. Their house was destroyed during Hurricane Harvey, which forced them to build a “tiny home” in the back to live in. They have 4 children, and the small space was not enough for the whole family. One of their children – the oldest, – had to go live with extended family. Mr. Fuentes and his family are fully united again.
