It has been more than a month since the food pantry at Sacred Heart Parish at 217 W. San Patricio Ave. in Mathis has been open, but today, April 22nd, between 10:00 am – 2:00 pm Catholic Charities of Corpus Christi was on site to pass out much needed food bags. “We originally planned on giving out 200 food bags,” said Shannette Hoelscher, Communications & Mission Advancement Coordinator of Catholic Charities, “but the calls keep coming in, so we added an additional 100 bags.” A drive-thru system has been implemented in the parish parking lot and 300 food bags, each containing fresh produce and meat, canned goods, dried fruit, rice, pinto beans, and tortillas, was given out. The community was asked to call and register over the phone. Once they arrived, they showed their ID and were given a food bag. “The need is great in the community and Catholic Charities is here to help,” said Hoelscher. Special thanks go to the Coastal Bend Food Bank, Fr. Peter Thenan, and Sacred Heart Parish for helping to facilitate the food distribution today.
